Irene B. (DeTurk) Berg

Irene B. (DeTurk) Berg, of Kutztown, passed away on July 13, 2023, while in hospice care at Reading Hospital. She was 94.

Irene was born and raised in Topton, the daughter of Lloyd P. DeTurk and Pearl E. (Carl) DeTurk Nester. After graduating from Kutztown High School in 1946, she became a bookkeeper for Atlas Minerals and Chemicals in Mertztown and later for Knittle Farm Implements in Kutztown. Her career briefly took her to Pittsburgh, where she lived and worked for a year.

While in Kutztown Irene met her future husband, Stanley, at the Strand Theater. They married in 1953 and together raised two children before Stanley’s passing in 2010.

Irene was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Kutztown.

Irene is survived by her son Michael, husband of Cathy, of Blandon; daughter Susan, of Kutztown; grandson Christopher, husband of Holly, of Annandale, VA; and great-grandchildren Tristan and Natalie. Other surviving family include sister Daisy, widow of Carl Wahl, of Kutztown; sister Violet, wife of Joseph Gasper, of Deltona, FL; sister-in-law Mary Louise, widow of Luther Luckenbill, of Topton; and seven nieces and one nephew. Irene was predeceased by her brother, Lloyd P. DeTurk Jr., in 1997.

In accordance with Irene’s wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Irene’s memory to St. John’s United Church of Christ Memorial Fund, 257 West Walnut Street, Kutztown, PA 19530.
