Jacob Sayshen

     Jacob Sayshen, 99, long-time resident of Kutztown died November 24, 2018. He was the husband of Helen (Vagasky) Sayshen, with whom he resided at the Topton Lutheran Home in his final years.

     Born in New York City, Jacob was the son of the late Harry and Anna (Furman) Sayshen. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Kutztown State Teachers College in 1942. After college, he served in the U. S. Army as Quartermaster with the 711th Air Material Squadron, 469th Air Service Group.

     Sayshen owned Kutztown Shoe Company until it closed when he retired at age 80. He was a member of the Kutztown Rotary Club for 60 years, serving as President in 1964-65 and received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

     Active with the Democratic club of Berks County, he served as treasurer and was Committeeman in Kutztown for the 1st Ward.

     Jacob was a trustee of Kutztown State College from 1972-83 and again from 2008-13. He served as Treasurer to the Pennsylvania Board of Trustees and was a member of the Association of State College and University Trustees. He was also a state-wide ambassador for the American Cancer Society.                      

      Surviving with his widow are his daughters Annette, wife of Glenn Fisher; Bonnie, wife of Zoltan Pukanecz; Helene, wife of Douglas Zucco; and grandson Avery Zucco. He was preceded in death by his sisters Mary S. Cleaver of Boyertown, Pennsylvania and Sophie Van Hercke of Fort Myers, Florida.

      Services will be held Saturday December 1, 2018 10AM at Saint Mary’s R.C.C. 14833 Kutztown Road, Kutztown. Visitation with the family 9AM till time of service.  Interment private. Edward J. Hildenbrand Funeral Home Kutztown in charge of services.
